A pickup truck in san francisco

October 11th, 2005 by bming1

I was suspended in disbelief when his image pixelated itself onto my television screen. I had seen this kid just three nights ago, waiting by the exit from the terminal at SFO. He was on the same flight to San Francisco I was on. I sat next to his friend, a Dukie senior like him, and they were headed to Stanford to check out the campus in preparation for their applications to grad school there. Three nights after I saw him, his likeness appeared on my TV, signaling his passing from this world. A pickup truck in San Francisco, my distorted connection to this life that once was. The news report said that the cab he was in had been hit by a Toyota Tacoma driven by a drunk. The cab driver, 76, had perished too. This kid was 21, about to graduate from one of the top academic institutions in the country and was going to California to place the pieces together for the next chapter of his existence. It did not happen. Instead, the volume of his life was shortened by steel, alcohol and the obsequiousness of one man to his drug.

I don’t know why this incident has affected me so strongly. I don’t know why I make it any concern of mine. All I know is that my heart is shaken. I gasped aloud when I first recognised his face on the screen. This was a rude reminder that we are but transients in this realm, and that no amount of orchestrating our lives will guarantee the results we expect. It also served as affirmation that I should continue along the orbit I’ve recently found myself following, learning, living and loving without restraint and reservation. If you happen to read this, my hope and prayer is that you are blessed with a similar understanding of your purpose, and that the tack you choose will enrich your life and the lives of those around you.

Dude, I send you nothing but good vibes and a prayer of peace for all who loved you.
